Noteworthy:
We have finally chosen the winners of our recent recipe contest. Choosing just six recipes from the many hundreds submitted was difficult, but we are delighted with the winning recipes, which appear in our recipe section.
DOUBLE WINNER
First Place for a recipe including Hot & Sweet mustard was awarded to Margee Berry of Trout Lake,WA for her recipe Sassy Citrus Chicken Skewers. The judges were wowed by the beautiful presentation of skewered chicken and lemon-wrapped dried apricots in a sparkling yet nuanced basting sauce. Berry is an accomplished cook who enters recipe contests as a hobby and is a frequent winner. She likes to create at least three new recipes each week. Her culinary abilities as well as a way with words were evident: she also won Third Place for her recipe using Seeds & Suds mustard: Patriotic Potatoes Perfect for a Party on the Patio. Rosemary branches used to skewer the grilled potatoes infused this dish with rosemary flavor which was complemented by a zesty vinaigrette with the crunch of mustard seeds in Seeds & Suds.
SPECIAL SCHNITZEL
First Place for a recipe including Seeds & Suds beer mustard was awarded to Renee Pokorny for Mustard
Caper Chicken Schnitzel. Pokorny, a new mother who lives in Ventura, CA said "I love schnitzel and
I'm always thinking of ways to make it better. I made an almost traditional schnitzel but I liked the blend of capers, lemon and Hot & Sweet mustard in the sauce." Judges praised the tangy and sweet flavor blend and noted the ease of preparation. "This is a dish you could easily feed the family midweek and yet it is beautiful and special enough to serve as a meal for guests."
FUSION FLAVORS
Roxanne Chan, of Albany, CA won Second Place using Mendocino Mustard Hot & Sweet in her refreshing Pacific Rim Rice Salad. "I am married to a Chinese man," she said, "so I do a lot of fusion cooking, combining flavors of East and West." The Chans like to eat healthy meals, and most of the fresh ingredients in the salad came from Roxanne's large garden. Chan has created more than 660 winning recipes in her 30 years of entering contests.
MUSTARD DUO
A Second Place prize went to Patricia Schroedl of Jefferson, WI. Judges described her Portobello Bacon Cheeseburgers with Seeds & Suds Mayo as "a juicy kaleidoscope of flavors." Schroedl's recipe uses both varieties of Mendocino Mustard, marinating the portobello mushrooms in a sauce including Mendocino Mustard Hot & Sweet and spreading the buns with a Seeds & Suds mayonnaise blend.
ELEGANT COMFORT FOOD
Roasted Beef Short Ribs with Creamy Hot & Sweet Mustard Sauce was the judges' pick for Third Place. Calling the dish "succulent", the judges praised the creamy mustard sauce made with a puree of roasted root vegetables. "This is the ultimate comfort food in an elegant presentation," said one. Winner Wendy Williams of Irvine, CA says "I'm a big mustard fan; I like it on and in everything." Using Mendocino Mustard in this recipe was natural as her husband's favorite meal is beef short ribs.
Recipes requiring a minimum use of 2 tablespoons of Mendocino Mustard were judged on the basis of creativity, taste, appearance and ease of preparation, as well as use of mustard to enhance a recipe. They were prepared by Chef Joe Seta, formerly of Sharon's By the Sea and currently Director of Events at the Hill House of Mendocino. Judges included Margaret Fox, past owner-chef of Café Beaujolais in Mendocino and now Culinary Director at Harvest Market; Michael Carroll, Business Coach; Kerry Marshall, former co-owner of Mudd's Restaurant in San Ramon, CA; Mendocino Mustard C.E.O. Devora Rossman; the firm's C.O.O. Kathy Silva and Margarette McGathey, lifetime creative cook and grandmother of 11.
The cash prizes were $500 for 1st place and $100 and $50 for 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Winners also received a mixed case of Mendocino Mustard varieties.
